For me, writing a word is like kissing the one you love. It’s the ability to capture with your mouth and hold onto the beauty in the world. Because, let’s face it, the world is a cruel place but also exceedingly beautiful: the smell of a storm rolling in, the streetlights reflecting off a wet road. Everyday miracles that can’t be repeated and that you wouldn’t notice if it weren’t for love.

That’s the kiss that nourishes, for at the very same time that you give it, you receive in equal measure. It’s the kiss that feeds you to the point where you won’t need to eat. Food almost disgusts you because this mouth of yours is made for immortality, not the meaningless doing and undoing of daily life.

At night you’re restless. You think about the words you wrote, the kisses you gave and received; you relive and savor each one. In the dark you get hung up about where you were truly truthful, or you start to think you went too far or not enough. You think about the things you didn’t say, those secret corners you didn’t dare brush your lips across. You toss and turn, counting down the hours, as dark and sticky as molasses, until you get another dawn, another chance to make things right. It’s a pleasurable torment.

If every word is a kiss, then a book is like falling in love. You’re swept off your feet, you waste away, all else feels like distraction. But you’re happy and you even fear when it will inevitably come to an end. Because you know that once it’s been taken away, life won’t taste the same.

  1. Ciao Heddi!
