Tired like an onion

I know you’ve heard this before, but I’m telling you that I’m back. I’m back to writing and I’m on fire. But only after a long period of being too tired to write, or even blog.

I know, I know, wannabe writers are full of excuses, and tiredness is the lamest of them all. But my tiredness, due to copyediting overcommitments, had layers and layers like an onion, and it inevitably led to tears. For months and months I worked every night from the kids’ bedtime till two in the morning, peeling back the layers of fatigue until there was literally nothing left of me.

The first layer, or level, of my tiredness involved no longer coping with making blueberry pancakes in the morning. Hence, toast all around.

Then, I had trouble remembering easy words like responsibility, and started mixing up English and Italian words. That was the second level of tiredness.

In seguito, stentavo a ricordare parole semplici come responsabilità, oppure cominciavo a ingarbugliare l’inglese e l’italiano. Questo era il secondo livello della stanchezza.

Third level: I got too tired to write in my blog.

Fourth level: Too tired to be nice.

Quarto livello: Troppo stanca per essere gentile.

Fifth level: Too exhausted to focus my eyes.

Sixth level: Too tired to eat. This was serious, nearly rock bottom.

Seventh level, the worst of all: Too tired to sleep.

Miraculously, at two a.m. I could still add the necessary semi-colons and tell the difference between a defining and non-defining clause. The mind works in mysterious ways.

But the eight months of academic copyediting are over, followed by three months of recovery. And now I’m back – and if I stay up till sunrise now it’s because I’m writing for me, because I’m on fire. Life is too short to keep on peeling onions.
