Open letter to my dark angel in Italy

You pestered me until I wrote you the short story that you were so strangely convinced I could write. You made me push away all my very important distractions – birthday cakes, academic proofreading, the exercycle – so that I could find the time to write it. You forced me to make space and quiet and a cup of tea so that I could be up with the crickets and the crickets alone.

And then something happened: words came descending down from the night like fireflies. The story wrote itself, and when I finally looked at it I saw a thing of dark beauty.

Please don’t worry if it doesn’t actually fit into your collection of short stories, if it will never see the light of day. It doesn’t matter. Because if it weren’t for you, my enigmatic and non-negotiable angel, I wouldn’t have found my style, my voice.

I’ve never even seen your face, and yet you have played a tiny but pivotal role in my chaotic life, like the ripple effect of a butterfly flapping its wings somewhere in the Amazon. And perhaps, more than an angel, you are a butterfly, like the black moth that flew in the house the other night, as big as a hummingbird. Now, when I least expect it, it comes reaching out to me – a fragment, or a figment, of the night – before disappearing back into the dark folds of some curtain.

There are no words to thank you. Sleep well and, for this and other reasons, be at peace with the universe!
