Caro Roberto

Caro Roberto

You’re awesome. (Sorry for being overly colloquial, I’m American.) I haven’t even finished reading La paranza dei bambini (Feltrinelli, 2016) and I can already say that you’re awesome. I like the rawness of your story about little Neapolitan punks who aren’t afraid of the Mafia, or of death for that matter. I like your masculine straightforwardness: without beating around the bush, you go straight for the jugular with singularly chosen words. I like how you break off sentences without warning, at just the right moment. It’s effective. Very effective.

Fa effetto. E tanto.

Reading your novel has made me think about what it means to be a man – about the violence, power and greed that make the world go round. I’m a mom to two little boys and, despite their teariness, they wrestle, compete, roar. I stand around and watch them in awe. I was surrounded by the same amount of testosterone when studying at the “Orientale” in Naples – young intellectual men that I envied for the way they didn’t get hung up on things, for their mastery of the art of cursing, their freedom of thought and life choices, their innate understanding that they could create something, anything – only to destroy it. I envied their yang, their inner Shiva.

Maybe that’s why I like your hooligan protagonist, Nicolas. And because I like him, I’d like to find out more about his motives. I’d like more stream of consciousness; I’d like to know that someone like him, who knocks over strollers parked on the sidewalk, has a consciousness. I’d like to see more scenes with his seemingly normal family, dialogues with his girlfriend Letizia, observations about those narrow streets so close they could “kiss.” I’d like to understand if his dismal neighbourhood is to blame for his violence, or perhaps the absence of good male role models, or television, or karma, or hormones in the chicken. I’d like to know if something has changed in our modern world or whether it’s just the same old tune over and over again since the time of the Neanderthals.

Maybe you don’t know either and that’s why you write about these things. I too write in order to unravel the mysteries that dog me in my own life. Therefore, I don’t expect or demand that the final pages of your book will be able to answer the question: what is a man? Because if you pull that one off, you’re not just awesome, you’re a god.

Sincerely, / In fede, Heddi Goodrich
